Figurative Work

In the late 1990's there was a return to drawing, and a series of very large prints"El Tajo de Ronda"(4 prints) based on drawings of the great gorge in Ronda in Spain, a pair of "Andalucia" prints, "Sierra de Ronda" and "Sierra de Geoff", and a set of Ronda Monoprints, particularly the famous 18th century bull-ring. This was followed by "Heads", a series of bold, strongly coloured studies, exploring relationships, and the isolation and interaction of people.
In the early 90's there were a number of prints celebrating the light, colour and shadows of Andalucia, including the "Shadows"(6 prints) series, along with a variety of prints of Gaucin and the area around the studio in Spain.

(See the on-line brochure www.palmera.demon.co.uk for details about the Spanish courtyard house and studio. The house is arranged as four self contained apartments with beautiful garden and courtyards filled with exotic plants and can be rented to individual travellers, or groups up to 13, including art courses.)

SPAIN

The figurative images inspired by the beautiful city of Ronda include a series of large etchings of the great Ronda Gorge, "El Tajo de Ronda"(1998) These four images can hang separately or make up a panorama view from the famous high 18th century bridge to the vast landscape beyond, and was an attempt to express the drama and depth of this extraordinary gorge.

The "Shadows" series was developed as a response to the brilliant light and shadows on the primitive walls in the Spanish mountain village where Brenda Hartill set up a studio in the late 1980s. Several of these prints combine the precision of separate colour etching plates with the sculptural qualities of collagraph.

All images are printed on Somerset 300gms textured paper, and in limited editions of 200

London

In the 80's much of the artist's work was based on "Londoner's London", the gritty back streets and park landscapes, and people not normally noted by the tourist. Moving to the studio in Southwark sixteen years ago, overlooking the elevated railway, lead to a series of "Trainscapes", and "Cityscapes" a fascination with the images of the commuter. Most of these works are now out of print, but the last copies are still available from the studio. The exciting changes which are taking place on the South Bank at the moment may give rise to a new London series, although no doubt with a very different approach. Watch this space!
