MID
90s ABSTRACT
|
|
In the mid-nineties Brenda Hartill's work concentrated on the abstract formations of remote elemental landscapes, and led on from her ongoing, (since 1985) "Variations" series, which deal with slices of the landscape and the universal forms of the land air and sea. In 1995 her strong collagraph compositions "Stormlands" and "Shadowlands"were inspired by the wild limestone mountains of Andalucia, with their dramatic weather, erosion, light and shade. There are also a series of large collagraphs based on flower and plant images, "Lillies", "Pond", and "Blooms". These images led on to a series of ten collaged etchings of varying sizes, "Elemental Icons", isolating the elements, which float in a pool of deep blues and greens. After a trip to New Zealand in early 1996, a further series of ten prints "Hot Rock" were produced , based on the primeval forces of volcanoes and thermal activities. This set was followed by three large collagraphs "Hot Pool I & II" and "Hot Lake", and the earthquake series,"Broken Lands" and "Fractured Earth". Much of the sculptural quality, texture, metallic glow and vibrancy are lost when showing the works on screen, or in printed reproduction. The following give an indication only of the range of works available, and ideally should be viewed along with samples. |
The Hot Rock series stems from a fascination with the recent eruption of Mt Ruapehu in New Zealand, which the artist climbed in the 1960’s and which she subsequently visited in 1996. Leading on from the Elemental Icon series, the colours are predominantly hot and fiery. Printed on textured deckle-edged, De Chene 400gsm handmade paper in strictly limited editions of 100. They are hand- printed from etched plates collaged onto carborundum-coated steel.
The prints are in a set of ten with the
following approximate paper sizes:
I-IV, 30"x22"; V&IV, 22"x15": VII & VIII, 15"x11":
IX & X 11" x 7 1/2"

A series of ten abstract, collaged, carborundum etchings with a landscape base. Pastoral Elements is a return to an older landscape, a land of rivers and rock, field patterns and strange natural formations. The aim is to give a sense of the universal, although the images were originally inspired by the Spanish landscape.

A series of four abstract, collaged, carborundum/etchings with a landcape base. The hot orange/ reds are offset by cool green/blues and the images are floating in deep indigo. The theme of the fragility of the earth grew from the earlier "Hot Rock" series, and the artitst's visit to New Zealand in 1996. The landscape is crisscrossed with dramatic reminders of very recent earth movements, thermal activity and earthquakes, which is less obvious in older landscapes where erosion takes over. In New Zealand there is always the sense of an underlying danger, of the possibility of cataclysmic changes to the landscape and human lives.
Set of four are printed on hand made 600 gms deChene paper, paper size 30" x 22"
A series of four large, abstract, collaged carborundum/etchings with a landscape base , "Fractured Earth" are an exploration of the earthquake/ erosion theme. The images come in two versions. The series below are set against a soft brown and deep indigo background.
The second version is in rich burgundies and reds-(version 2 - see below). Originally this version was printed on de Chene paper, while the first version was on Somerset, but now both versions are printed on de Chene.
The theme of the fragility of the earth grew from the earlier "Hot Rock" and "Broken Land"series, and the artitst's visit to New Zealand in 1996.
Images are printed on handmade 600gsm deChene paper, paper size 37" x 30"

"The Variations" is an ongoing series of over 35 prints developed over the last 12 years. Many of the early "variations" are now out of print, and a small selection of the later prints are shown here.(For full selection see price list or inquire) All the later prints (except Variations VI) are printed on Somerset 300gms mouldmade paper 30" x 22", and the images are all approximately 24" x 9". The narrow tall images represent a "slice" or "glimpse" of a wider landscape, and aim to capture the essence of the structure of the land, often delving into strata, and the elements of land, water, cloud and the sky. The prints are usually heavily textured, and have an embossed surround, suitable for "floating" in the frame.
An ongoing series series of 13 prints, all of which are unique in colour, printed on different handmade Asian papers, often with a chine colle of delicate handmade Asian tissue paper and silver leaf. All in limited editions of 100 or 150. The silver leaf is added to create light in the picture, and another dimension to the image. For full list see price list or inquire. One example only available to view.
